Congratulations on the release of your new series, Warriors of the Mist. What’s the most challenging part about starting a new series?
For me, it’s getting to know a new cast of characters from the inside out. I spend a lot of time choosing the right names for each person, making sure it fits them. I often look for pictures to represent that character for me. I’m more interested in the right attitude than I am getting the exact right facial features. Figuring out what personal possession is the most important to the character and why is often a helpful tool in getting to know them.
Who are the Warriors of the Mist?
They are five warriors who need to redeem their honor. To do so, they have vowed to serve as the avatars of their gods, the Lord and Lady of the River. They sleep beneath the river until a supplicant the gods deem worthy call on the Warriors to do battle.
Why are they also known as the Damned?
The warriors face the judgment of the gods every time they are called forth to do battle, and their time to walk the land is limited to a few weeks. There are grave consequences if they ever fail to carry out their mission for both the supplicant and for the warriors themselves.
Can you tell us about the first release in the series, My Lady Mage?
A dark shadow is spreading over the land of Agathia. Lady Merewen and her people are suffering at the hands of her uncle, but the evil goes far beyond him. Out of desperation, she studies the old legends and learns of the Warriors of the Mist. She risks everything, including her heart, when she unleashes the Damned in defense of her people and her land.
What type of heroine is Merewen? What about the hero, Gideon?
Merewen is the kind of heroine who will do whatever it takes to keep those she cares about safe, even at great risk to herself. Gideon is a warrior through and through with a powerful sense of duty and honor. His loyalty, once given, is unshakeable.
Is it love at first sight for these two?
There’s a definite spark when they first meet, but it has been centuries since Gideon has let himself care about anyone other than his four friends. He also knows that soon he must face the gods and that the other warriors will share his fate. He won’t let himself fail them or Merewen, so his mission is everything.
Without giving away too much, what’s your favorite scene or quote from the book?
My favorite scene comes near the beginning of the book when Gideon first realizes that Lady Merewen is unlike any other woman he’s ever met. When the youngest of the Warriors, Averel, is introducing Gideon to Lady Merewen, he says, “And this, my lady, is Gideon, our captain and Avatar of the Gods.”
The power of her gaze held wait, as if she dared to judge him and perhaps found him lacking.
“That is quite a title, my lord. It must be a heavy burden to carry,” she said, a teasing smile tipping up the corners of her mouth.
He was too old and too tired to put up with the audacity from one such as she.
Will Merewen and Gideon be in future books or will each book have a new lead hero/heroine?
They’ll be back in each book, but the focus will be on one of the other warriors. The second book, Her Knight’s Quest (March 2013), is about Duncan. The third book , tentatively titled Honor’s Price, will tell Kane’s story.
What else can we expect to see from you in 2012?
I also have a September release from Harlequin Nocturne . Savage Redemption is Conlan Shea’s story, whom we met in Vampire Vendetta. He’s a man who was betrayed by the one woman who meant everything to him. At long last he gets the chance to confront the ghosts from his past and finally restore his honor.
