What is Gin, Bria, Finn, and the rest of the Elemental Assassins gang up to in By A Thread?
I’ve been calling this my “Gin on vacation” book. Basically, Gin decides to get out of Ashland for a few days so she can rest, relax, and recharge after everything that happened in Spider’s Revenge. But Gin’s vacation ends up being anything but relaxing. One of Bria’s friends is being threatened by a particularly nasty vampire, and Gin decides to come to the rescue – and finds herself in just as much trouble as ever. There’s also some emotional fallout between Gin and Bria because of what happened in Spider’s Revenge, so Gin is dealing with that as well.
Has Gin changed since her battle against Mab Monroe?
Gin has changed. Killing Mab was such a big focus for Gin for so long, and now that Mab is dead, Gin sort of finds herself at loose ends. One of the things I wanted to explore with By a Thread and the next few books in the series is what happens when the heroine finally defeats her nemesis. What are the consequences of that? What’s the emotional fallout? So those are some of the things that Gin has to deal with in By a Thread and beyond.
What is Jonah McAllister up to since Mab’s death?
Oh, that Jonah. He’s always scheming. Now that Mab is dead, Jonah realizes that he needs a new boss, so he’s been putting out feelers to the other underworld figures in Ashland. He’s also got his sights set on Gin – and is busy plotting her death.
Has your series unfolded the way you originally planned?
The overall story arcs have gone pretty much how I thought they would – Gin going after Mab, Bria coming back to town, Gin and Mab having their showdown.
But I’m a panster so I never know what will pop up while I’m writing a book. For example, at first, I thought Roslyn was going to be a minor character, but as I wrote Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, and Venom, I kept coming back to her, until now, she’s part of Gin’s inner circle. The same sort of thing happened with Jonah McAllister. At first, he was just going to be one of Mab’s flunkies, but I’ve had so much fun pitting him against Gin that he’s developed into another nemesis for her.
What do you have in store next for this series?
Widow’s Web, the seventh book, will be published on Aug. 21. That book delves into Owen’s backstory, and readers will learn more about his growing up in Ashland.
There will be at least three more Elemental Assassin books after that, so I’ll be writing about Gin and the gang for some time to come.
Is there any celebrity chef Gin would like a chance to cook with?
Hmm. That’s a tough one, but I would say Sandra Lee. She has a lot of tips and tricks, and I think those would help Gin with her cooking and still leave her plenty of time to battle the bad guys.
