Interview and Giveaway with author Jeaniene Frost

We are very excited and thrilled to have author Jeaniene Frost stop by Paranormal Haven. We are both huge fans of her Night Huntress and Night Huntress World books so it is a real pleasure to have Jeaniene with us.

For those who are not familiar with her books (if you haven’t read the, we highly recommend them!) the Night Huntress series is about Cat & Bones. It is their story of how they found each other, struggles they have had to face and all the @ss they have had to kick along with way. The Night Huntress Wold books are the stories of the characters from the Night Huntress World. For a better explanation, visit Jeaniene Frost’s website. Keep reading after the interview because we have book to giveaway and we know fans will want this one. Alright, I’m sure you didn’t stop by for us so lets jump into the interview…..
________________________
Paranormal Haven: Before we get started, we want to first thank you for taking time out of what we are sure is a very busy schedule to answer a few of our questions.

Jeaniene Frost: Thank you so much for having me, and thanks for your patience with this interview.

PH: Why write paranormal books?
JF: I’ve always been drawn to the paranormal, even back when I was a child. I’d sneak to watch horror movies – most of which had a paranormal element – and search for books with a supernatural twist to them, which was easier said than done. There wasn’t a big selection of paranormal books when I was growing up, which is why I started reading adult books at a very young age. With the amazing paranormal selection in both Middle Grade and Young Adult markets today, kids and teens have no idea how great they have it. Heh, someone stop me before I start talking about walking uphill to school both ways next ;-)

PH: What is the most difficult part of writing?
JF: The business aspect. I have some tough days writing, sure, but what makes me want to pull my hair out usually falls under the “author” hat, not the “writer” one. You’re running your own business as an author, and with any business, there’s so many different things to handle, all at the same time that you’re trying to write the next book. I had no idea of this when I first published, so I’m still trying to learn how to juggle everything.

PH: Aside from vampires, is there any other paranormal creature you would like to write a series about?
JF: Well, in my books, I also have ghouls, ghosts, demons, and magic, so I like writing about all those things, too. I did a short story with werewolves a while back and really enjoyed that as well. As long as it’s weird and supernatural, chances are, I’ll want to write about it.

PH: Do any of your characters give you a hard time while writing?
JF: YES. Many of them do. I’ll highlight Kira as a specific example because she’s the heroine of my upcoming novel. When I thought up the story for Eternal Kiss of Darkness, I already knew my hero, Mencheres, very well because he’d been a side character in several books already. I thought I knew all about my heroine, Kira, and I had the main plot of the book figured out. So I figured it would be a breeze to write – until I actually started writing it.

*cue me being unable to complete the first chapter for over a month* When I’d try to write scenes with Kira, it was like pulling teeth. Since Eternal Kiss is written in both Mencheres and Kira’s points of view, I couldn’t just show her through actions and dialog; I had to be in her head. And despite several starts and stops, an outline, and knowing all the facts about Kira’s background, I just wasn’t in her head. It finally occurred to me that the problem boiled down to a cliché Hollywood question – what’s my motivation? Or in this case, Kira’s motivation. I thought I knew what was driving her, and it turned out I was ALL WRONG. Once I figured out what motivated Kira, she really came together for me as a character. Words started spilling onto the page and her scenes with Mencheres had all the sizzle they’d been lacking. It was such a relief – and funny at the same time. Kira wasn’t about to let me write her “wrong”, no matter how hard I tried at first ;-)

PH: What is the difference between your Night Huntress series and your Night Huntress World series?
JF: The biggest difference would be that the Night Huntress series follows the same protagonists, Cat and Bones, through several books. The Night Huntress World series consists of stand-alone novels, which means the protagonists are for that book only. First Drop of Crimson was Spade and Denise’s story, but Eternal Kiss of Darkness is Mencheres and Kira’s story. Spade, Denise, Mencheres, and Kira will still all appear as side characters again in the Night Huntress series, but I have no plans to give them their own separate books again.

PH: Your upcoming release, Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Night Huntress World, book 2), will be out July 27th. Can you tell us about it?
JF: As I mentioned, this book features Mencheres and Kira as the hero/heroine. Night Huntress readers already know Mencheres is one of the most powerful vampires in existence, but lately, he’s lost his ability to see the future. Now that Mencheres can’t see what’s about to happen, he has enemies crawling out of the woodwork to come after him since this is their best chance to destroy him.

Kira is a Chicago private investigator trying to work her way up to more significant cases. She intervenes in what she thinks is a regular mugging and ends up witnessing a ghoul attack on Mencheres. Knowing Kira had seen too much, Mencheres takes her with him, but erasing her memory proves more difficult than he imagined. If Kira repeats what she knows about the undead to others, Mencheres’s enemies have even more ammunition against him. But keeping Kira with him to protect the secrecy of his race soon proves even more dangerous when Mencheres realizes he’s falling for her.

PH: Will Cat and Bones be making an appearance?
JF: Cat and Bones are both in Eternal Kiss of Darkness, as well as Vlad and several new characters.

PH: Is there a character’s book you are not looking forward to writing?
JF: No. If I wasn’t looking forward to featuring a character as a protagonist, then I wouldn’t write a book about him/her. If I can’t even get excited about a character and story, how could I expect any readers to once it was out?

PH: If you had to pick between spending a day alone with Vlad or Ian, which would you choose?
JF: Probably Vlad. He’s tougher than Ian, but Vlad doesn’t do anything without a reason, so I’d feel more likely to come out of that day alive and with my sanity intact. Ian? I love him as a character, but Ian does what Ian likes – and he has a warped sense of humor. Ian might think it was fun to mesmerize me into spending the day barking like a dog and eating grass, or other countless things that I wouldn’t find humorous. Vlad would consider it beneath him to mess with a human like that, so the worst Vlad would probably due was mesmerize me into thinking I was mute so I wouldn’t keep asking him questions.

PH: What do you think of all the talk about One Foot In the Grave’s famous chapter 32? Did you ever expect one chapter to be so popular?
JF: Never in a million years. I wrote that chapter (and book) before I even started trying to sell Halfway to the Grave, so I never thought it would see the light of day. When the book sold, I asked my agent how much of it I should censor for public viewing. She said to let my editor decide. Before I sent her the book, I warned my editor that a certain scene was extremely graphic and it needed to be trimmed, but I’d let her decide what was okay for public viewing and what wasn’t. My editor, when she sent the book back to me, edited not one word of the content for Chapter 32. I was stunned. I even tried to go back and take out, ah, certain aspects of it out, but she refused and said it was staying as it was. At publication, I was certain I’d get outraged reader emails telling me I’d crossed a line, or that my sales would suffer as a result, but, ahem. As you can guess, that didn’t happen.

Sure, some people didn’t care for it, but I was shocked that they were the minority. One of the most memorable complaints I read about that chapter was a review saying it was OBVIOUS that I was under thirty because only a very young, dumb author would assume any woman over thirty would find that disgusting scene sexy. As I was well over thirty when I wrote the book, and many of my readers who loved the scene were over thirty, too, that amused me.

Ph: How did you come up with Bones? Was there anything that inspired you while creating him? JF: Well, I’ve loved vampires since I was a child horrifying my parents because I kept rooting for Dracula to defeat the “evil” VanHelsing, lol. As a teen – and I KNOW this dates me – I was a huge Billy Idol fan, so there you get Bones’s English accent and the platinum hair he has in book one. Bruce Campbell’s portrayal of Ash in Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness accounts for some of Bones’s attitude, and who didn’t sigh over Viggo Mortensen’s gorgeous, chiseled cheekbones in Lord of the Rings? So you see slivers of those people in Bones. He probably gets some of his wise-ass sense of humor from me, as well as his fear of flying, but Bones really evolved into his own character while I wrote him. The process of writing clues me into so many things about my characters. It’s like the difference between first impressions and what someone’s really like once you’ve spent time with him or her.

PH: Will we get to see more of Tate and Juan in future books?
JF: Tate and Juan are both in THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE, book five of the Night Huntress series. I expect both of them to also appear in book six, but as I just finished five and haven’t started six, I don’t know how much they’ll appear in it yet.

PH: If Cat and Bones could go on a double date with any other fictional couple, who would it be?
JF: That’s such a fun question. I’d never be able to come up with only one answer for it myself. Readers, help me out! If you could hook up Cat and Bones on a double date with another fictional couple, who would you most like to see them go out partying with?

PH: Where do you see Cat and Bones in 10 years?
JF: I actually know the answer to that, but I can’t tell you, or it would spoiler the end of the series :-) Rest assured, every book I write brings them closer to the end I have planned, and while I’ve promised readers that ending will see Cat and Bones together, I’m not prepared to offer any other hints on what that might entail. Hey, *wink* I don’t have the nickname of Evil Author on my fan site for nothing!

  1. OMG how amazing would it be to see Kate and Curran go on a double date with Bones and Cat.
    That would rock! lol

Congrats on your upcoming release! I can’t wait to read it!

  2. Great interview.I can`t wait for the next Cat and Bones book.

What would I like to see them double date with? I would say Merit and Ethan from Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampire series.

  3. Hmm…Elena and Clay from Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld!

  4. Damn, someone took mine, I was going to say Eric and Sookie (From the books) – ok, now I have to think of someone else — ok how about Gin and Finn (I know they aren’t an item, but they make a great couple for a date) from Jennifer Estep’s elemenatal series
    contestmom AT hotmail DOT com

  5. Elena and Clay
    or
    Acheron and Tory

  6. Great interview! I’ll say Acheron and Tory.

  7. I really enjoyed this interview, but Jeaniene Frost is one of my favourite paranormal authors. I would love to see Cat and Bones go on a date with Mercy and Adam as it would be very interesting.

I am looking forward to your upcoming release!!!

  8. Awesome interview! I would love to see Cat and Bones go on a double date with Merit and Ethan.

  9. I think Riley Jenson and Quinn would have a good time with Cat & Bones.

  10. My first thought was Kate and Curran and then my second thought was Elena and Raphael.

  11. I really think that Barbara had the best idea by putting Riley and Quinn together with Cat and Bones. I can totally see them hanging out and having a blast. I’d also like to see Eidolon and Tayla (from the Demonica series) join the fun!

This was a tricky question because you can’t really put a bunch of alpha males in a room and expect them to get along. I agreed with Barbara and picked Eidolon because both men have a calmer disposition and are less likely to cause a ruckus. Don’t get me wrong…they’ll kick ass when necessary but I see them as able to kick back too.

I could also see the BDB spending time with Cat and Bones.

Excellent interview- loved the inclusion of chapter 32. Not many people have asked about that, at least that I’ve seen.

  12. How about a double-date with Angel and Buffy? hehe

  13. charles and Anna from alpha and omega series. I could just se bones and charles haha together lol

  14. Eric Northman and Sookie Stackhouse would be fun.

but then it would also be funny to see them go out with Edward and Bella! I can see it now, Bones to Edward, “What the bloody hell is wrong with your skin, mate?”

Great interview! I love JF and I can’t wait to read EKoD!

  15. I’d say Bones & Cat go to dinner with Jean-Claude & Anita Blake (and of course she’d bring all the “other” boyfriends as well!)

Great contest, I’m a big fan of Jeaniene Frost!

  16. Another one.

Bones to Bella: “So your saying your bloke is a virgin?! Well, I’m the bastard son of a whore, luv. Earned my living by bedding many women, I did. Maybe I can offers some tips. It’s the least I can do.”

  17. Oh definitely dinner with Bill and Sookie. Bill will of course sulk and Cat and Bones will be giving each other silent, questioning looks while Sookie chatters on to cover the awkwardness.

  18. Eric and Sookie of course!

Great interview and some new and different questions for Jeaniene! Thanks!

  19. I don’t know Cat and bones yet but they can go out on a date with Acheron and Tory from Sherrilyn Kenyon books thay are one of my favorite couple in a series

    sasluvbooks(at)yahoo.com

  20. I would say either Kate and Curran or Elena and Clay.

  21. My first thought was Bill and Sookie, but I busted out laughing at the thought of a double date with Edward and Bella. Too funny!

  22. Great interview. I would say Elena and Raphael.

  23. I’d definitely have to say Mac and Barrons from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series … and not just because I’m totally obsessed with those books, lol :P … I think the four of them are all so totally kick-ass, and have the most awesome sense of humors, that there’s NO WAY they wouldn’t have a blast together!!! (Plus – a date would mean Mac + Barrons FINALLY admitting that they have feelings for each other – and I’m all for that!)

P.S. I love the Chapter 32 question, and Jeaniene’s reply, tee hee … it was shocking, reading it for the first time, but in a good way! :P Yeah, go Bones!

  24. Hmmm, I’d have to say I’d like to see a double date with Kate and Curran or Merit and Ethan.

Awesome interview and I cannot WAIT for this book!! I LURVES Mencheres and have been waiting long time to read his story.

  25. I would love to see Cat and Bones go on a double date with Zane and Amelia from The Dream Thief “Drakon #2″ by Shana Abe. These two would get along well with them because Zane is a street urchin like Bones and “Lia is a rebel like Cat….

Always such a pleasure to read an interview with Jeaniene and this was no exception and thanks so much for a chance to get book 2 in the series!!!
    jackie b ^_^

    jacabur2008(at)gmail(dot)com

    Filling out form now…

  26. I’d love to see them on a double date with Eric Northman & Sookie Stackhouse. Bones & Eric have matching senses of humor and sex drives. It’d be an interesting night for sure!

  27. I have not read the books yet… but how about Edward and Bella!?

  28. Love the interview!=)

I am so happy to read the answer to Chapter 32 and who ever that commenter was- pooey to you!! LOL!

I would love to be at a dinner table with Cat and Bones & Clay and Elena…. Hell- excuse the woman and I will dine with both gentlemen ;D

Great giveaway- heading over to fill out the form!!=)

  29. double date with??? I have no idea, ouwld have said Rachel and Kisten but since Kisten is gone maybe Merit and Ethan

  30. I have never read any of your books but would like to. I enjoyed the Twilight Series alot. How about Edward and Bella for a double date. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com

  31. Ms Frost seems like a really nice person and very in touch with her fan base. I love Cat and Bones and have read all her books…

For the double date it has to be Sookie and Eric from the SVM :D. I’d love to see how Sookie reacts to Cat :)

  32. I love so many characters and couples, but I think an interesting dinner date would be with Mira and Danaus (Jocelynn Drake).

    b(dot)cardone(at)hotmail

  33. I think they could have fun with Kate and Curran. It would be interesting conversation.

    usignolc(at)yahooDOTcom

  34. Really great interview! I am a HUGE fan of this series and think Ms Frost is amazing :)

I would pick Sookie and Eric to go on a date with them. Mostly because I think Eric and Bones would have fun trying to one up each other :)

  35. FABULOUS interview!! Great questions and answers :)

I’d love to see Cat and Bones have dinner with Kate and Curran. I could see Cat and Kate messing with Bones and Curran all night long. (Although I think that restaurant would clear out pretty quickly after they walked in!)

  36. Great interview! I’d say Sookie and Eric, but so many already have (hee-hee), so I’ll suggest Alexia and her Alpha Were husband, Conall Maccon from Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series. Alexia and Conall are British, so Bones might have some tea time fun with them. Also, Alexia is soulless/preternatural so touching her renders a supernatural human again. I wonder how Cat would react to that. Ah, the possibilities! ;)

  37. Loved the interview! Oh man that is a hard question I would love to see Cat and Bones on a double date with Vlad and a female of his choice. I really love the way you write Vlad in the books Jeaniene he is so funny and larger than life. Add to the fact that Bones doesn’t like him and you have fireworks galore. Or if it had to be from another series I would like to see them double date with Sookie and Eric. :)

  38. Anita and Jean Claude.

  39. I will love if they will have a double date with Mac and Jericho Barrons from the Fever series. That will be a really interesting date :)

  40. Thanks to my fave EA for the interview!!

As far as whom I would like to see C&B go on a double date with…hmmm, this is actually kind of tough. But, I think Faythe and Marc (should Rachel end the series w/them together) from Rachel Vincent’s shifters series. Faythe and Cat are both kick butt heroines.

Others mentioned Clay and Elena…not sure how well that’d go over given Clay’s aversion to anyone new and outside the Pack. But, I think Elena would be up for it.

  41. OMG Cat and Bones totally have to go on a date with Kate and Curran. I can just imagine now all the trouble they would get into. *sigh* Crossing my fingers that BFFs Jeaniene and Ilona will take my idea to heart!

  42. How about Booth & Bones from the show Bones? How many chances do you get to have 2 people named Bones at one dinner. :)

  43. Cat & Bones are one of my favorite couples. I know I’m sounding redundant but I have to say Sookie and Eric would be my choice. They have a blast!

  44. Definitely, Merit and Ethan from Chicago Vampireland would be my first choice but I guess Eric and Sookie would be my second. Since they are all vampires, I think they’d do better together than with shifters even though I love the other shifter couples mentioned.

  45. I would love to see Bones and Cat going on a double with Meredith Gentry and all of her men. I mean, come on we’ve got vampires, shifters, demons, and ghosts so let’s throw some faeries in there too!

  46. Thanks for the interview.
I would have to say Eric and Sookie.

  47. If it were a double date with someone within that series, I pick Spade and Denise. But if it had to be a couple from another series, I think Zsadist and Bella would be interesting. It would be funny to see how Bones and Z would react to each other.

  48. Of course I have to say Kate Daniels and Curran! Otherwise I would say Eioldon and Tayla from Pleasure Unbound. Thanks for hosting!

  49. Just to be different how about them double dating with Homer and Marge Simpson ?

The start of a new genre ! Comedic Paranormal !

    Carol T

    buddytho {at} gmail DOT com

  50. Awesome contest! How about they go out with Lucy and Ricky? That’d be something!!

  51. Would of posted sooner, but down and out all day yesterday with a migrain…man do I hate those things.

I absolutely LOVE your series’. Cat & Bones are one of my Faves. It is hard to pick a couple to have them go on a double with there are so many. How about having them go to last meal at the Black Dagger Brotherhood compound with all of the brothers an their mates! That would be a hoot!

  52. I would like to see Mercy and Adam go on the double date with Cat and Bones.

Love both of the series and thanks for the interview.

  53. I would love to see Kyrian and Amanda (Dark Hunter) double date with Bones and Cat.

  54. I think Cat and Bones would double date with Mercy and Adam :) It would be a good match and make for a great story!

  55. I’d love for Cat and Bones to go out with Elena and Clay from Kelley Armstrong’s Tales of the Otherworld series. I think it would be rather comical to watch them interact.

  56. Oh – I’d love to see them with Rhage and Mary. Would’ve said Zsadist and Bella, but Z wouldn’t do it…

  57. I will go with Kate and Curran also. I think they would be great.

  58. I’m so excited for this book to come out. Awesome interview!

I would love to see Cat and Bones go on a double date with Jill Kismet and Saul from Lilith Saintcrow’s Jill Kismet series. Can you imagine putting Jill and Cat in the same room together?

  59. I would say Acheron and Tory. Great interview. I love Jeaniene’s books.

  60. I would say Dante Prejean & Heath Wallace from Adrian Phoenix’s Makers Song series. All four of them could use the time off!

  61. Kate and Curran comes to mind! I’m sure the couples will have pleeenty of fun for the double date if ever!

  62. oops i posted on the wrong post…got confused! LOL

anyhow id love to see them double date with Emma and Mr Darcy!

    Thanks!
    Froggy

  63. I would like to see Cat and Bones go on a date with Bowen and Mari from Kresley’s Cole IAD. They would be so funny having all of them. And Nix should come along too.

  64. Jaime and Jeremy from Women of the Otherworld xD

  65. Great Interview! I was just introduced to Jeaniene’s books 2 months ago! OMG Awesome!!!!
Hmmmm Cat and Bones on a double date…….I would say with Dee and Simon from Cynthia Edens I’ll Be Slaying You. I lurvvvvv Simon!
Thanks for the great interview and giveaway!!!
    JoJo

  66. I think it would be good to see Cat and Bones on a double date with Kitty and Ben from Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville series.

  67. Double date with Vishous and Jane

  68. Hmmm…
With Imriel and Sidonie ? (Kushiel’s legacy)
    Or Sookie et Eric?

  69. Thanks for having me on the blog, Stephanie and Athenna! And thanks for all the double-date suggestions for Cat and Bones, everyone. I know I’d love to be a fly on the wall for those set ups :).

  70. I think they should double date with Buffy and Spike, especially if Bones is wearing his hair white blond. That would be quite a sight to see. Hopefully Buffy can keep her slayer instincts in check. After all, Cat and Bones kill bad vamps also.

  71. Ash and Tory, or Wrath and Beth … =D

  72. I haven’t met Cat or Bones yet, but I do adore Mercy and Adam (Patricia Briggs) so I’ll put them down for an interesting double date. I’d love to meet Cat & Bones though!

  73. I would say Betsy Taylor and Eric Sinclair from the Queen Betsy series by MaryJanice Davidson.

  74. i would say Mira and Danaus from the Dark Day novles i love how they both faught eachother in the begining of thier books =]

  75. Buffy and Angel or Kate and Curran.

  76. I am going to say Charles and Anna from Patricia Briggs series.
    great questions and fantastic giveaway.

  77. Mac and Barrons with Cat and Bones! Great double date!

Thanks for the great giveaway! I’m very excited for this book!

  78. Rose and Dimitri!

    Wonderful Giveaway! Thanks a lot!

  79. Hi,
I’m new to this series..but I would double date Cat and Bones with Sebastian Wroth and Kaderin the Cold Hearted from Kresley Coles Immortals After Dark Series.

I loved the interview. Has made me want to read the series even more.

Good luck to all those that have entered the contest.

    :)

  80. Kate and Curran!

    thanks for the giveaway

  81. This comment has been removed by the author.

  82. Q: Which fictional couple you most want Cat and Bones to go out on a double-date with?

A: I haven’t read Cat and Bones’s book(s) yet so I don’t really know them enough to make a proper guess… but… I want a shot at that free Eternal Kiss of Darkness, so here goes nothing…

Perhaps the fictional couple I think would be good for Cat and Bones would be Kate and Curran of the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Because Kate and Curran fights like cat and dogs *ahem* but love each other like crazy… like I imagine Cat and Bones would be :)

    With sparks flying…

Congrats on your new release Jeaniene!!

    Cherry Mischievous

  83. Not knowing Cat and Bones all that well I’d say that Mac and Barrons from KMM’s Fever series would be interesting. I have some catching up to do I can see. :)
    Carol L.
    Lucky4750@aol.com

  84. That’s pretty hard to choose considering there’s so many cute couples out there.
I think it’d be quite amusing to double date Cat and Bones with Gideon and Scarlet from Lords of the Underworld! I wonder what Cat and Bones would make of Gideon’s way of speaking! :D

  85. I would love to see Cat and Bones on a double date with Riley Jensen and Quinn from Keri Arthur’s Guardian series.

  86. I think so many would be hilarious and awesome to see dining together.. but I think I’d choose Kate and Curran!

  87. I was first going to go with Anita and Jean Claude. But I have to say it would be more fun for Cat and Bones to go on a double date with Merit and Ethan from Chicago Vampireland (:
